Our Story

Welcome To Mad Hatter

In 1935, Newmer Ham opened Ham’s, offering curb service and deli-style food. Al Freiberg and Carl Herbst took it over in the 1940s. The popular restaurant easily accessible to what would become UNCG and Grimsley High School became a hangout for students.

Restoring the building and maintaining its original floors and ceiling is just a part of the history that remains in this classic restaurant from 1935.

Mad Hatter is comprised of a small group of people with a passion and energy for this business and a tremendous amount of combined experience.

The Mad Hatter is a place with a rich history, a place with a unique culture, a place to create new memories.

Mad Hatter is Greensboro’s local getaway.

Yea, not much really needs to be said here. We’re kinda known for our mouth-watering hamburgers.

The only thing better than our beer selection is our daily specials. Well, actually our cocktails are pretty great too.

“Service was great”

“First time here and it was good! Service was great and we sat out on the patio! I got the fish and chips and it was good. My husband got a burger and said it was good as well. I would like to go back for brunch one Sunday bc the menu looked really good!”

“I will be back for that frittata !!”

“Went for brunch with girlfriends. I had the frittata pomodoro with bacon. The fritatta was delicious and flavorful. Great bacon. Delicious muffins are served with the meal. They have $9 carafe of bloody Mary’s and mimosas. It turned into a day drinking event. Good times. One of my girlfriends had a slight problem with a mixed drink. That manager came over personally and apologized and asked how they could improve on it. Wow. So impressive they genuinely want to offer a better experience.
Very attentive to the customers. I will be back for that frittata !!”

“Outstanding Brunch!”

“Had their breakfast Brunch today and it was great. The Pancakes/Chicken was some of the best I have had and the Huevos Rancheros were the best I have had anywhere. Also the Hadder potatoes were fresh and tasty. Service was excellent and the prices very reasonable at $10 a plate.”
